The HISF race of 20 May succumbed to the mid-summer mid-day lull that is the bane of sailboat racing in Chesapeake Bay. The 7 knot long course #7 race started in a nice 6-8 knot breeze under overcast skies. The first leg, a fetch saw good boat speed across the fleet, but the skies cleared and the wind slowly began to die. The fleet managed to round the red nun 8 at the northwest end of the Herring Island flats but the wind died into a becalmed afternoon. From the red mark it was a true beat to the mark at Tilghman point, unPhaseD went left hoping to avoid the adverse tide but the rest of the fleet went right and found a slightly better breeze that propelled them further up the course. The race was called around 14:30 when a consensus was reached among the skippers that the finish order would be determined by the position of the boat relative to the fleet. Victorine with the most progress to R took 1st, La Cinquieme 2nd , unPhaseD 3rd , ReJoyce 4th , and Cordelia wisely consulted with the wind gods, withdrew, and beat everyone to the bar.
